Who Do You Trust?

So, this morning my friend Robin sent me a link to a cartoonist’s blog name Jon Birch.  I spent a few minutes looking over some of his past posts; chuckling at times, thinking at times, and even getting a little irritated.  His work is definitely thought provoking and very difficult to dismiss.  You should check it out!

One of his cartoons caught my eye and made me think about a conversation I had with my friend Tim a few weeks ago.

Trust me?

Trust me?

What I got thinking about is how little trust we really have in our culture these days.  This past weekend I have really enjoyed hanging out with Robin, Aaron, Zach and the kids from Friendship Celebration in Eagle.  What’s been really freeing is that I have had little to no idea where I am or where I’m going for the whole weekend.  I just get in the car and let people drive me around and plan my life; it’s been great.  No stress.  No worry.  No head-aches, just chilling out.  What makes it possible is that I trust these people explicitly.  I know that none of them are going to take me somewhere I’m going to hate being, or that’s going to harm me.  Since I trust them, I don’t have to waste any brainspace with stress or anxiety.

Jesus said once, “”Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”" (Matthew 11:28 MSG) The real question isn’t whether or not Jesus is capable of making good on that promise, it’s do we trust him enough to follow him there even if we don’t know what the final destination is?

Great thought! That last question hits it on the head! "…do we trust him enough to follow him there even if we don't know what the final destination is?"
